EDITION058 : FABRIC FACT

Fabric Facts: Linen and Tencel

When we decided to create our own collection for The Acey, we knew we wanted to be as transparent as possible. Each step in the design process involves making choices not only about colour and shape, but also about ethical and environmental considerations when it comes to production practices and materials. We also knew we’d be learning along the way and want to share some fabric lessons. Read on for a peek behind the scenes before we launch in August.

Our first collection, designed in our East London studio and made near us in the city, uses only 100% Linen and 100% Tencel fabrics. The contrast in textures allows for the same silhouette to work completely differently – in comparison to the more structured linen weave, Tencel produces something a little bit slinkier. All Tencels and linens we’re using for the collection are offcuts from other fabric production.

Why Linen?

Durability – Linen is resistant to pilling, lasting longer and reducing your need to buy more. Comfort – A natural fibre, linen breathes and is extremely absorbent. Sustainability – From plant growth to fabric production, flax and linen require much less energy than other plants and fabrics. Little-known fact: most linens are compostable, either at home or by commercial recycling forms.

Why Tencel?

Sustainability – Tencel is produced by processing eucalyptus wood and is highly sustainable. Eucalyptus, like flax, can grow without irrigation on land that isn’t ideal for farming. This means that production doesn’t compete with food farming. Tencel is also compostable.

Why Monomaterials?

We had sustainability in mind when choosing the make-up of the fabrics we would use. Until technology catches up, blended fibres (like denim with stretch) are far more difficult to recycle than those comprised of one material.
Keep an ear to the ground for coming announcements about the first release of our in-house line of mindfully-made womenswear.
